TSU online volunteers are now literally online
The volunteer organization TSU-Online assists international students to adapt to university social and cultural life, with the help of Russian and international student volunteers.   - The main goal of the organization is to help international students, so the new mode of work did not particularly affect our activities. The International Student Services Center is still operating - you can come to an open office where the staff is always ready to help, - said Valeria Kuznetsova, a specialist of the International Division. - Also, volunteers conduct online consultations. Now the most frequently discussed issues are obtaining visas and leaving home. Soon, we plan to involve specialists at the International Student Services Center for consulting, to solve issues in personal communication, and not through the internet and mail.   The creative life of an organization with a new lifestyle has not disappeared either: volunteers help and come up with new projects. Now the whole team is discussing a plan of events in a remote format for international students who by September will not be able to return to Tomsk.     The launch of psychological assistance in a foreign language is expected, as it is widely available so far only for Russian-speaking students. The project is being developed with Azamat Nayman, head of the TSU Psychological Service, and will be open to all international students.   The last topic of the online meeting with students was the “Country Presentation” project - on May 17, students viewed the culture and traditions of Mexico and Zimbabwe. In full-time format, this would have been with national dances, music, and dishes, but in the remote format, it was with a presentation about national traditions and students performing national songs.     About 500 people will remain in the Sail (Parus) dormitory for the summer. These are TSU students and students of the Pre-courses Department entering undergraduate and specialty programs.   - The life of international students is no different from the life of Russian students. Someone also did not have time to go home and spends their vacation in a dormitory, someone misses live communication and their friends, and someone does not have enough time to complete all the learning tasks. In general, the problems for all students are similar now, - adds Valeria Kuznetsova. - They also are actively looking for work, including at the TSU UniProfi labor exchange, and some jobs are already arranged, for example, as an English-language counseling consultant and a Chinese-language project manager

Good results for TSU in metallurgy and inventive activity
The Expert Analytical Center completed the next stage of research on the publication and inventive activity of Russian universities. TSU entered the first lines among the universities in two areas at once: metallurgy and inventive activity. In eight subject areas, TSU is among the five strongest universities in the country.   When preparing the publication activity ranking, 16 main areas are considered, among them: engineering, computer science, mathematics, materials science, earth sciences, ecology, social sciences, chemical technologies, chemistry, energy, humanities, life sciences, physics, economics, management, and medicine.   “Metallurgy (as a part of Materials Science), National Research Tomsk State University rose to 1st place” - the ranking compilers said in the statement.   Alexander Vorozhtsov, TSU Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation, noted that such high metallurgy indicators are ensured by the work of several scientific groups at once. Ilya Zhukov’s team works in this area, creating light alloys based on aluminum and magnesium; Manzur Ziyatdinov’s group is engaged in high-nitrogen steels; and Vladimir Promakhov is engaged in additive technologies. Research in metallophysics is carried out by the scientific groups of Professor Victor Gunther and Professor Yuri Chumlyakov.   - Over the course of several years, TSU has focused on the development of these areas, which gave a natural result, - the Vice-Rector emphasized.   TSU is included in the five leaders in earth sciences (5th place), physics and astronomy (5th place), medicine (4-6th place), materials science (5-6th place), engineering (3-5th place), chemistry (5-6th place), chemical technology (3-4th place), and ecology (4th place).   When compiling the index, the number of university patents sold, licensed, and developed in collaboration with companies registered abroad over the past 5 years was taken into account. The share of cited university patents, the share of current university patents in the total number of registered patents, and the total number of patents registered in 5 years were also considered.

Applicants from China began online preparation for admission to TSU
The TSU Pre-courses Department has launched an online school for applicants from the Hechuan Experimental Middle School. The high school students from China plan to enter the Faculty of Journalism, the Institute of Economics and Management, and the university partner of TSU on the project Big Tomsk University at SibSMU.   The preparation of applicants is carried out online in three profiles, the humanities, economics, and biomedicine. It includes intensive work, in the Russian language, in general knowledge, classes in the language of the specialty, and the scientific style of speech of the chosen profile.   - Our goal is to prepare high school students for admission to TSU, and also, in principle, to study at any other university. The school was planned in a full-time format in Tomsk, but because of the pandemic, we decided to implement distance learning, - said Daria Tarakanova, head of the Pre-courses Department.   In 2019, TSU signed a memorandum with the Hechuan Experimental High School, which implements Russian-language specialization for high school students planning to enter Russian universities. As part of the partnership, TSU is preparing them for admission.   The school is located in Chongqing, the largest city in the world to have a Russian language department, created as part of the Chinese government's “One Belt, One Road” program. This center was the first Russian language learning site in the area; in the first semester, teachers from Tomsk worked there, now all the interaction has been translated online.   - Despite the pandemic, applicants from China are continuing to prepare for admission to Russian universities, in particular to Tomsk State University,- Daria Tarakanova emphasizes. - Modern educational trends in China are very closely related to language training.   For reference. The Pre-courses Department has existed at TSU for 6 years. It prepares Russian and international high school students for admission to TSU, with classes organized in the Russian language, and in subjects of the humanities, engineering, and economic, medical, biological, and natural sciences.
