TSU has good results in the ShanghaiRanking 2020
ShanghaiRanking has released the ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2020. This is one of the most respected rankings in the world. In the Russian segment, TSU has taken a leading position in Earth Sciences (1st-4th place), Metallurgy (3rd place), and Physics (6th place).   In the world segment of the ranking, TSU is in the group 101-150 in metallurgy, and this is the result of many years of work by the university in this area. In the near future, TSU will update the instrument base and some of the new equipment will be purchased at the request of metallurgical scientists.   Ilya Zhukov’s team works in this area, creating light alloys based on aluminum and magnesium; Manzur Ziyatdinov’s group is engaged in high-nitrogen steels; and Vladimir Promakhov is engaged in additive technologies. Research in metallophysics is being carried out by the scientific groups of Professor Victor Gunther and Professor Yuri Chumlyakov.   In the ShanghaiRanking 2020 for academic subjects, TSU showed its traditionally good results in Physics, entering the group 401-500. This is also the result of many years of successful work in world-class projects. TSU staff participates in several experiments at the Large Hadron Collider - ATLAS, TOTEM, and CMS in CERN.   The university is also in the group 401-500 in the Earth Sciences, thanks to research on climate change and the search for new deposits of valuable minerals, non-ferrous and noble metals, coal, and hydrocarbons.

International students run TSU social networks in 5 languages
The University is now giving international students and applicants the opportunity to learn more about the life of TSU and Tomsk, with pages on Instagram and Facebook in Turkish, Indonesian, Arabic, French, and English for the Indian audience.   The idea of international students having pages on social networks in their native languages came up a long time ago, but there was no understanding of how to promote this activity, explains Natalya Zhadovets, head of the Department of Recruiting and Documentation Support of the TSU International Relations Department. Due to the spread of coronavirus and the announcement of the self-isolation regime, many international students found themselves in a difficult financial situation and became interested in the possibility of part-time work, and here the idea of social networks came to be, thanks to the student labor exchange UniProfi.   - Most students were enthusiastic about this type of activity - talking about their university, about their own experience of studying at it, and about Tomsk and local traditions. The pages were created in May, and through them there are already potential applicants who are interested in the conditions for admission, - said Natalya Zhadovets.     The content of the pages is invented by the students themselves. The most popular pages right now are in Indonesian and Arabic. There are already more than 50 and more than 270 subscribers, respectively.   - The plans are still for shooting videos about the life of students in isolation and not in it. TSU researcher will help CERN to “lighten” the data warehouse system
Yury Bordulev, a researcher at the High Energy Physics Data Analysis Laboratory, Faculty of Physics, has received a grant from the ATLAS international collaboration to develop new data storage algorithms. In using these algorithms, it will be necessary to reduce the amount of stored data while storing information. The grant will allow the TSU physicist to undergo a six-month internship at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).   ATLAS is one of the Large Hadron Collider particle detectors. This is one of the largest scientific facilities in the world, consisting of many interconnected systems and services. The ATLAS detector is served by approximately 3,000 scientists and engineers from 181 organizations, including TSU. During operation, ATLAS generates an unprecedentedly large data stream - tens of petabytes per year. These data are stored for subsequent analysis by physicists.   - The problem is that CERN data warehouses are already operating at the limit, and with the start of a new experiment in 2021, existing capacities will not be enough. In this regard, the task was set: to reduce the amount of stored data while saving information. In today's algorithm, a fairly large portion of the memory is spent on the storage system infrastructure. It is this part that needs to be “facilitated”. To do this, we need to develop a new algorithm for storing data, apply it to all the data that was collected for 2018, implement this algorithm in the ATLAS system, and adapt it to all the services that access the storage, -Yury Bordulev explained.     In early 2020, a TSU group completed a large project to test readout electronics as part of the modernization of the ATLAS muon detector.   - The ATLAS collaboration grant competition was a great opportunity for me and our group to join in solving new large-scale problems,- adds Yury Bordulev. - One of the results of the project should be the emergence in Tomsk of a team responsible for the development of ATLAS data storage system.

The world's largest peatland helps solve global climate problems
Russian, German, and French scientists have prepared an article on the wetland landscapes of the Earth. The joint work shows how great the role of peat bogs is in absorbing carbon (one of the main components of greenhouse gases) and cooling the planet. While peat bogs have been lost in a significant part of Europe, Siberia’s Vasyugan Swamp is the main “refrigerator” of the planet. It helps reduce the effects of global warming, reduces flood risks, and stores and purifies fresh water. According to scientists, the ecosystem services that peatlands provide to humanity must be monetized. The publication will be published in a special issue of the journal Ambio (Q1) by the Swedish Academy of Sciences.   In the spring of 2020, TSU scientists took the initiative to include wetlands in the calculation mechanisms for the Paris Climate Agreement (formerly the Kyoto Protocol). Accounting for peatlands in the allocation of quotas will bring major bonuses to Russia.   - When our German colleagues learned about our initiative to include peat bogs in the calculation mechanisms for the Paris climate agreement, they fully supported us, - says Sergey Kirpotin, one of the authors of the article, director of the TSU Center for Excellence Bio-Clim-Land. - Europeans, like no one else, understand how important peatlands are. In some EU countries, they are almost gone, so the interest of German scientists in Russia and the Tomsk Region is simply huge. After all, it is here that the Vasyugan Swamp is located - the largest peat bog in the world, which helps to solve the climatic problems of the whole world.   According to the authors of the article, for many centuries peat bogs did not have recognition, they were traditionally regarded as worthless inconveniences and even fatal places. Therefore, the bogs were actively drained to convert them into agricultural and forest lands, supposedly beneficial for humans. Some countries almost completely lost their swamps: for example, in Germany their area decreased by 98%, in Denmark by 93%, in the Netherlands 95% of peatlands were lost, and in Ireland 82%. Dried peatlands are converted from carbon dioxide sinks to a source of CO2, especially when a large amount of carbon is released into the atmosphere by fires.     - The fact that Europe drained “only” half of its area of peatlands is explained by the huge number of peatlands in Russia, and not by the restrictive use in this and other countries,- notes Sergey Kirpotin. - The Soviet Union was even the world champion in draining peatlands, which was associated with a clearly negative attitude to these ecosystems. By the end of the 20th century, about 69,000 km² of peatlands in the former USSR were drained and degraded as a result of human activity. These processes especially affected the European part, while the vast peatlands in Siberia remained untouched. And now they provide ecosystem services to the whole world.   The authors emphasize that swamps are not only the main cooling element for the Earth. They store and purify fresh water from heavy metals and other pollutants, and reduce the risk of floods. Along with this, peatlands, in particular, the Vasyugan Swamp, are the habitat of the rarest species that are on the verge of extinction. The rarest of them is the thin-billed curlew, found only in this place and now the symbol (logo) of the Vasyugan Swamp.   - The role of swamps in maintaining climate balance is underestimated. Peatlands of the world make up only three percent of the earth’s surface, but at the same time, they contain 500 gigatons of carbon, which is double the carbon reserves of the entire forest biomass of the planet. This makes peatlands the main long-term storage of carbon in the terrestrial biosphere. - explains the director of the TSU Center for Excellence Bio- Сlim-Land. Therefore, we, with our German colleagues, advocate bringing the swamps to the Paris Agreement and thus monetizing the ecosystem services critically important for humanity that the swamps render to humanity.

TSU will launch the first ceramic dental post production in Russia
TSU’s Research and Education Center (REC) Additive Technologies has developed a full-cycle technology for the production of dental posts (implants) from nanostructured ceramics that are biocompatible and aesthetically attractive for prosthetics. Small-scale production for dental clinics is planned for the technology site of the university’s small innovative enterprise.   Nanostructured ceramics based on ZrO2 (zirconium dioxide) is an advanced material in modern medicine. ZrO2 has been proven to have excellent strength, hardness, and biocompatibility. Dental implants made of zirconium dioxide do not cause allergic reactions and look as similar to natural teeth as possible.   The technology of manufacturing dental implants from powders of the Japanese company Tosoh was developed in a scientific group under the supervision of Vladimir Promakhov, deputy Director of REC Additive Technologies.   For the production of implants, a team of Tomsk developers uses CAD-CAM technology, which ensures the production of up to 100,000 units per month. TSU scientists worked with the nuances of the materials for 5 years. In particular, they achieved controlled shrinkage during sintering up to hundredths of a millimeter.   The TSU technology is able to adapt quickly to the needs of surgeons and dentists and produce products for their tasks. On their own technology platform, developers create implants of different shapes and sizes, with different threads and different shapes of the abutment (the head, on which the crown “sits”), and special keys with which surgeons screw them into the bone.   Now developers are negotiating with dental clinics that deal with dental prosthetics

TSU is in the QS top 250 and top 100 most international universities
Tomsk State University took 250th place in the new ranking of the best universities in the world, QS World University Rankings 2021. The Quacquarelli Symonds ranking is one of the most respected in the academic community. For 8 years, TSU has shown positive dynamics there.   - We have always emphasized that rankings are not the final goal for universities, but they help to evaluate the correctness of the chosen development vector. In this case, TSU has followed the course towards the formation of the university’s ecosystem and the export of educational technologies, TSU Rector Eduard Galazhinsky commented on the success of the university. - I want to thank all the staff for such a result.   TSU entered 21% of the strongest universities in the world. The university showed noticeable growth (+18 points) in terms of international student ratio, becoming 95th in the world, and in academic reputation (+23 points) - this indicator has the largest weight and accounts for 40% of the total university score. By the faculty/student ratio, TSU takes 29th place among world universities. Overall, the TSU position has risen by 18 points.   The Russian Federation is represented by 32 higher educational institutions in the QS 2021. TPU, the second Tomsk university in this ranking, took 401st place (387 last year).   As it was a year ago, the top line of the best universities in the world is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the second is Stanford University, and Harvard University retained third place.

Oxford and Sheffield linguists will teach in new master’s program
Peter Mitchell, Doctor of Pedagogy, a full member of the Institute of Linguists of Great Britain and Associate Professor of the TSU Faculty of Foreign Languages, became the head of the new autonomous master's program Global Masters in ELT Leadership in Linguistics. The language of instruction will be English, and the target audiences of the program are China and East and Southeast Asia. The key partners in the program are the University of Cambridge Assessment and Oxford EMI.   The program has already been approved and will be launched in a year. This is the first global master's program in teaching English, uniting leading scientists and managers from around the world. The share of international-level teachers in the program is about 50%, including teachers from Sheffield, MIT, Shanghai, and Montreal.   - The idea of the program came to me thanks to my personal experience of studying at different universities. It was understood that the master's programs in the world do not meet the requirements of the market or the needs of applicants. The uniqueness of our new program is that, first, a global team of teachers from different universities, countries, and profiles (linguistics, pedagogy, management, branding, and entrepreneurship) will be involved and, second, the program will be implemented mainly using remote technologies. Also, winter and summer schools will be held in Tomsk and partner countries, - said Peter Mitchell, who is the program manager.   The online work of the program will be implemented in partnership with the TSU Institute of Distance Education. Also, negotiations are currently underway on collaboration with the educational platform Coursera. The internship can be carried out both in the places of residence of graduate students and at TSU and program partners. Students will have the opportunity to undergo CELTA certification (in collaboration with Cambridge University).   The master’s students will cope with the compulsory disciplines that make up the core of the program, and at the same time, they are offered a wide range of elective disciplines, which provides the opportunity to build an individual educational trajectory.   Graduates of the program will be able to become leaders in language education in Asia. Such specialists will be in demand in secondary educational and language schools, colleges, universities, and departments of education at the municipal, regional, and national levels.
