The Vladimir Potanin Foundation has published the results of its scholarship grant for students. Elizabeth Stahr, a Master’s student of the TSU Faculty of Philology, became the first contest winner from Germany in the history of the Potanin scholarship.
Elizabeth Stahr earned her scholarship from the foundation on the second attempt. Last year she reached the final stage of the contest but did not become the winner. However, she said that she received valuable experience in the practice of the Russian language in the stressful situation of teamwork with strangers.
- Winning this competition is not only a great joy but also a responsibility - says Elizabeth. - Since I've been studying in Russia, I feel that I'm representing not only TSU but Germany and when they see me, they think: “Yes, the Germans are like that.”
In 2016, Elizabeth became one of the first international students awarded scholarships of the Governor of the Tomsk Region. Now a Master’s student under the guidance of Svetlana Fashchanova, assistant professor at Faculty of Philology, she is developing a method of teaching the Russian language by listening to radio programmes: it helps adaptation to the features of speech and learning the correct accents and intonations. In addition, as a volunteer at TSU Online, Elizabeth helps other international students settle in Tomsk and the university campus.
This season 5,565 applications from students of 75 leading universities nationally were filed for the competition. By the results, 500 Master’s students won the scholarship in the amount of 15,000 rubles a month until the end of studies. In total, this year there are 18 Master’s students of TSU among the winners of fund competitions.
